Take America Back to what and from who?
Signs that blast out the message TAKE AMERICA BACK are in front of homes and businesses and along roadways in Bucks County, PA which is a pivotal county in the midst of a must-win state for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I scratched my head when I first saw them pop up like so much fungus from ground that was made fertile for vitriol and hate. Do they mean they wanted to take America back to a time when white Christian men ran the show as women, people of color, immigrants and those whose religious practices did not fit into what was approved up by those in charge were second class citizens? Do they mean that they want to take America from those they deem a threat to their supremacy? This cleverly worded double entendre reveals a certain mindset among some Trump voters.
Nothing the Republican candidates for President and VP say shocks me. There seems to be no low to which they won’t descend. From accusing Dems of advocating for 9th month abortions or execution of newborns to making up stories about Haitian immigrants kidnapping and consuming pets in Springfield, Ohio, it gets more appalling by the day. Even when confronted on the lie, JD Vance justified his statements, “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m gonna do,” he told CNN’s Dana Bash, “because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast.” Suffering of the American people? Do the people who came to this country and by legal standards are documented count too? Apparently not, in his mind and that of his running mate.
He seems to be hell bound to alienate voters of all religions and cultures, except white evangelicals. This is his latest diatribe aimed at Jewish voters. “Trump received a warm reception at the “Fighting Antisemitism in America” event, but he was accused outside of the summit of “dangerous antisemitism” for saying “if I don’t win this election,” then “the Jewish people would have a lot to do with a loss.” This Jewish person and most of those she knows will be happy to share in that intention with our votes.
What about the petulant childish temper tantrum with the screed, “I Hate Taylor Swift!”? This came after the pop superstar endorsed Kamala Harris following the debate. The Lincoln Project created a video that called out DT’s deeply embedded misogyny in this ad.
DT was planning a visit to a beautiful Polish Catholic shrine in my area called Our Lady of Czestochowa (pronounced ches-to-ho-va). The stated intent was to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda for a dedication ceremony of a new Polish monument at the shrine. The reality is that he thought it would be a good way to win over Polish voters in the area.
The thought of the former and wannabe president defiling a sacred site with his hatred turned my stomach. I have meditated there and communed with Mother Mary since she was a nice Jewish girl too. I kept thinking that something would happen to change the plans. I even had a chat with her again. And so it did. The visit was canceled.
Perhaps Mother Mary had something to do with it. I did hear that many people called the shrine and complained. The reality is, a political candidate has no place making a house of worship a campaign stop.
Do his adherents really care as he lies with nearly each breath? Apparently not. What I have heard and read from numerous sources is that as long as he is doing their bidding, they will look the other way. Cognitive dissonance at its finest. And all of those people standing behind DT and JDV at their rallies, cheering for them as they spout their racist rhetoric are likely descendants of immigrants. How f-ing dare they?
By voting for DT and JDV, this is what people are signing on to.
